MITRE has committed to identifying strategic actions towards a climate positive environmental footprint.

We are looking for an energetic learner who is organized, detail oriented, and dedicated to sustainability monitoring, reporting, and improvement. As a Sustainability Specialist, you will be part of the Sustainability team, working across global operations and supply chains to scale solutions. This role will support the implementation of MITRE’s Sustainability Management Plan, with a primary focus on the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory and responsible sourcing. You will collect, analyze, and interpret data on energy consumption, waste management, GHG emissions, and procurement. This role will conduct research on best practices, emerging trends, and regulatory requirements in sustainability and identify opportunities for improvement. You will contribute to the development of policies, procedures, and guidance that align with sustainability principles.

Primary Tasks/Responsibilities

  • Data entry, review, and documentation management for GHG emissions inventory and responsible sourcing.
  • Supporting the accuracy, consistency, and verification of the GHG inventory by researching requirements, preparing necessary documentation, and performing data quality analysis.
  • Gathering publicly available information about suppliers’ GHG emissions and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) programs and extracting relevant information to support MITRE’s objectives.
  • Researching how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be used to facilitate responsible sourcing and supporting creation of a strategy for applying AI methods to MITRE sustainability actions.
  • Contributing to industry standards and best practices guidance documents to support MITRE staff in adopting more sustainable behaviors and processes.
  • Recommending improvements to MITRE’s procurement practices to reduce Scope 3 impacts and improve ability to meet sustainability objectives.

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher or equivalent experience in Sustainability, Environmental Science, or related field.
  • Classwork or one or more years of experience working in sustainability, research, data entry, or data analysis.
  • Highly effective organization, prioritization, multi-tasking, and attention to detail skills.
  • Exceptional communication and data analysis skills.
  • Intellectually curious, “Can-do” attitude, pro-active, and resourceful.
  • Must be able to work in a team-oriented, fast-paced environment, and possess a commitment to excellence.
  • Familiarity or willingness to learn sustainability reporting requirements (e.g., CDP, GHG Protocol, ISSB, etc.), procurement functions, and supply chain sustainability.
  • Capable of working independently and effectively within a geographically diverse cross-functional team and with all levels of staff/management.

We encourage anyone who is interested in this position and who meets some of the qualifications to apply. We recognize that a unique perspective and background can enhance a role when many, if not all, of the listed qualifications are met.
